My name is Jarel Francis and I reside in Columbus Ohio, and I am a student at Capital University. You have done countless of amazing things in your lifetime, one that I truly admire is your contributions towards education in Africa. Education is extremely important for all parts of our world, the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls is a wonderful and unique contribution, and I had a few questions pertaining to. What or who inspired you to create an entire school specifically for girls? What impact do you believe women in Africa will have on their country if they are educated? Thank you for your time.

Classroom management
Since I have grown up in a tough area of Columbus Ohio, It has inspired me to give back to my community. Since I know tough things can be I would like to teach in Columbus City Schools. I feel like I can relate to those students more than maybe children at a private school because I have been where they have been. I grew up in a one parent home like some students will grow up like Ive had times where I couldn't afford my books for school, times where if i didnt eat lunch at schol I wouldn't eat for the rest of the day. Ive had times where I couldn't go to school because of the trying things that were going on at home. In other words, I know what its like to struggle, so I will be able to understand students that also deal with those issues daily. I would like to have a fun environment for my students where rules are enforced. I want my classroom to be reward oriented. if you do good things you get good rewards if you disobey the rules then there are consequences. I want my classroom rules to be enforced so I will have rules hanging in parts of the room so that children are reminded how to be rewarded and how to get a consequence. I want my children to respect me and the only way that can happen is if I respect them.I want us to have a good time in my classroom and make fun ways of earning the curriculum that we may be covering. I will not tolerate bullying in any way, shape, or form. You will be immediately kicked out of my class for that.Id like my students to take tests weekly, to see how they are doing in my class. I will also have break time/fun days in my class towards the end of the year if the classroom reaches a certain behavioral goal. I will also like to put movies into my lesson plans that pertain to the lesson we may be covering, so students can feel relaxed some days without having a whole lot of homework but still learning.
Readings Part 1
5 text chosen
For each text, what does the author believe education is or should be? In other words, what is the best form of education according to this person? Write a couple of sentences to this effect about each author you read.
- In the first text I chose to read (Athenians schoolboys life)
Aristotle explains the life of a child going to school, what he has to memorize and learn in school and never forget. It seemed as if he didn't have much of a choice on any decisions made in his education, Aristotle believed that education started at even the earliest stages of life and ends at the end of life. I agree. You are constantly learning,k everyday you learn something new whether you know it or not and whether you are in the classroom or not. He is correct when he says that you learn most things outside of the classroom in real life.
-The laws of the twelve tables in chapter 3.
The author explains in detail the rights of a father in the roman period.
The rules were quite disturbing, but it seems here that the men in Rome were more important than the women in all aspects of life including education.
-Education of Girls in Middle Greek period
Women were not held to as high a standard as men. the women were taught how to do things that would benefit the home. They did not learn the things men did their place was in the house.
-Period of home ed
There was a time in history where there weren't any schools at all. The author explains here how education served at home, in camps, and other places. Mothers would educate their daughters on the duties they would have when they grew older, fathers would educate their sons how to be a man.
-American education
Education came from the Puritans in New England. Ed was taught around the bible and its teachings. Children learned how to abide by the rules of the lord.
2. What do your five texts have in common? Where do they differ? You could make a Venn Diagram or write a paragraph about the similarities and a paragraph about the differences.
All texts have two main things in common.
1. they are all centered around education. Even though the book is clearly about the history of education, there is still a similarity between all 5 texts that I read and that is how important education is.
2. The men and wealthy were the only ones educated. In all the texts that I read, the wealthy family with boys were the only ones educated. That is because they could afford education, and they were allowed to learn. girls were not allowed to be educated in any of the texts i read
1. the difference was the form of education. all education was based around the countries religion (or lack of) so children were educated on certain rules of their society. for example some were taught Christianity in classrooms some were taught roman religion or method.
Readings part 2
Fred Douglas played a huge part in African American Revolution of education. After being taught the alphabet by his mistress, and being read to, he discovered the importance of reading and education, and set out to help other African Americans see its importance as well. He became a leader of the abolition movement, he wrote several books talking about his life as a slave gave white people awareness that blacks can be intelligent and more than just slaves, and gave confidence to blacks that they can live in society and be just as educated as whites. All by learning how to read!
John Dewey was an educational reformer whose ideas influenced education greatly. He is considered one of the founders of psychology. He also wrote books explaining the importance of education in society, and raised awareness to all that education is needed for the economy and well being of life.
